Description:

"True Love" is the name of an unreleased song played by the late Elliott Smith in the last years of his life at live shows. The lyrics are extremely grim. They deal with buying drugs off the street and graphically paint a picture of his desire to leave rehab. Recently, two studio versions were leaked to the public. Both can be downloaded from www.elliottsmithbsides.com

" True love is a rose, behind glass thats locked and kept closed, may be just for me, cause my hearts been attacked and shattered by tough love, bad love." Elliot s use of metaphors are especially poignant in this song. His choice of melody and harmonizing somber voice add a quality that I have rarely experienced from a song and singer/ songwriter. Brilliant!!, but haunting considering his fate. True love is the legacy he left for souls that are touched by his music.

such an awesome song writer and too much of tragic figure, my favorite artist of all time, stabbed himnself in the heart, which is commendable to me, he had balls, romantic

I have to respond. The manor of his death in my opinion is tragic, end of story. There is not a glimmer of romance or heroism in a suicide in a despairing human. This is presuming his end of life was in fact a suicide rather than a murder. His death still remains unknown. It's tragic and awful, and to glorify it seems misguided intellectually and spiritually.

nice comment vamphaery and i would have to agree with what you said to the T....it is the only way to be happy in a stereotypical or artificial sense because cars, houses, etc provide the same empty feeling, i guess true love is the answer, whatever that means to each individual person, enoughhhhhh of that.......the live performance of this song is EVENNNNNNN more emotional, i have it thank god, thank god i stumbled across a life altering piece of art

I've always thought one of the most poignant things about his songs - whether he admitted it or not (and I'm not saying I'm definitely correct in this interpretation) - is that songs like this & St. Ides Heaven seem to describe an almost spiritual euphoria derived from drug use. That he seems to indicate their use as his sole or primary source of happiness in life is very stirring. :(

This guy is unbelievable. I can't really grasp jusy how good he was. For only a short career, it's mind boggling how much he did. Where can I get a copy of this exact version?
